The Rhum JM distillery is the smallest distillery on the French Caribbean island of Martinique. Located in the foothills of Mount Pelee, Rhum JM harvests its own sugar cane grown from the mineral-rich volcanic landscape.

Rhum JM is known worldwide as a leader in Rhum Agricole. Expect freshness and fruity notes synonymous with Rhum Agricole: Vegetal, Lime, Honey and Pepper. The aged ranges combine subtle spices with tropical fruits and toasted wood notes from ageing in re-charred bourbon barrels.

Rhum JM is produced from fresh sugar cane juice, which is harvested from the estate plantations on Munt Pelee. The volcanic landscape offers mineral-rich soil which accompanied by the sunny climate gives the sugar more flavour. Production is also carried out under the strict guidelines set out by AOC. As the sugar is harvested from the distillery plantation, the harvest is then able to be pressed within hours of being cut. This maintains the flavour and reduces the degradation of the sugar cane by not allowing the cane to metabolise. The freshly pressed sugar cane juice is then mixed with spring water which flows from Mount Pelee. Then mixed with yeast and left to ferment in giant fermentation containers for 24 hours. The result of this is a sugar cane wine of between 4% and 5% abv. The wine is then distilled in a Creole still, in accordance with AOC regulations. Then aged for 6 months in steel tanks, before being aged in Re-Charred Ex-Bourbon White Oak casks.

Rhum JM is well known throughout the USA for its Rhum Agricole Blanc, but also produces a VS and VSOP which are aged for 3 years. An XO is aged 6 years. A 2001 Vintage, which is aged for 10 years. As well as a 1995 Vintage, which is aged 15 years. Rhum JM produces around 500,000 litres of rum per year from a staggering 90,000 litres of pressed sugar cane juice per year.

It was not until 1845 that Jean-Marie Martin purchased the sugar factory at Fonds-Preville with the intention to convert it to a distillery and make rum. Trading under his own initials, Rhum J.M was born.

However, after some financial difficulties, the distillery was sold to the Crassous de Medeuil family in 1914. The further purchases of two neighbouring estates (Fonds-Preville and Bellevue) combined to make up a 400-hectare plantation. Then later in 2002, Group Bernard Hayot purchased the Rhum J.M distillery and trademark. They invested heavily into the brand and estate to maintain their status as one of the finest rum brands in the world. Over the years, Rhum JM have altered the way that they operate to improve their environmental footprint, namely to convert the distillery to a no-waste facility including a no-exhaust boiler, conversion to 100% reuse of bagasse, and the installation of lily ponds which neutralize the water waste coming from the distillery.
